About the Talk: Computers, the Division of Labor and Crowdsourcing

In the past 4 years, we have seen the growth of large systems that combine both computer and human labor. Often identified as “artificial artificial intelligence,” these systems are used for tasks as diverse as creating metadata, object recognition, translation, editing and other complicated tasks. Examples of these systems include systems as diverse as those supported by Amazon Mechanical Turk and Wikipedia. Though they are often identified as the new step in computer science, they actually have a long history and represent the next step in the processes that have created divided labor.

About the Speaker:

About the Talk:
Trends, Technologies and Standards Activities for Collaborative Displays

With the rapid convergence of communication, computing and consumer electronics devices, we begin to live in a world that has screens everywhere. Effective collaboration of the plethora of displays that vary largely in size, resolution, rendering capability and presented contents becomes a challenge, at the same time an opportunity to explore. Because of the unparallel user experience provided, collaborative displays are becoming the indispensible ingredients for always on, always connected and high performance computing in the pervasive environment. Usage scenarios of them have grown explosively just in a couple of years. Different enabling technologies could be players of this game. To name a few, high throughput video cables, Wireless interconnection (Bluetooth, 802.11, Ultra Wideband, 60 GHz radios), cross device rendering/user interaction and advanced video codecs. Lectured by a long time researcher on collaborative displays, this talk gives a comprehensive and in-depth overview of the trends, technologies and standard activities on this topic.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Xun Luo is a research staff member at Qualcomm Inc's Office of the Chief Scientist. Before joining Qualcomm, he was a researcher with Motorola Labs in the Cognitive Sensing Systems group from 2006 to 2008. Dr. Luo conducts applied research in networking, systems, and applications in the pervasive and ubiquitous computing & communications context. He has published intensively on premier IEEE conferences and journals, served in program committees in numerous IEEE conferences, and acted as journal paper referees in the areas of wireless communication, mobile computing, ubiquitous computing, graphical systems, and intelligent data management. He authored the pioneering book Personal Augmented Computing Environment, which is used by several large wireless companies and universities.
Dr. Luo is the inventor and co-inventor of five U.S. patents, pertaining to methods for context-aware computing, protocol and system for wireless display, intelligent activity inference of cell phone users, and NFC system for personal item tracking. He is a key contributor to multiple wireless standards, spanning across WPAN, WLAN and WWAN. Dr. Luo holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a senior member of the IEEE, and serves as IEEE San Diego Section vice chair and Computer Chapter chair.

Event Annoucement - 3rd Workshop on Cloud-Mobile Convergence for Virtual Reality (CMCVR 2011)

About the Workshop :-
Today's mobile devices improve significantly in processing performance, multimedia rendering power and storage capacity. However, their capabilities are still (and naturally will be) limited by the intrinsic requirements of small form factor, low power consumption and acceptable price cost. At the same time, internet-based VR contents, resources and systems have witnessed rapid growth in recent years. An emerging trend is to make use of the broadband connectivity of mobile devices effectively for seamless access of the virtual environment computing and content storage clouds. We believe that by bridging the clouds and mobile devices, it is hopeful to provide better immersion and interaction experience for the VR users in a pervasive context. This promising scenario calls for research advances on several key aspects, including new architecture of infrastructure, enabling technologies for mobile devices, optimized representation and distribution of contents, applications that adopt the cloud-mobile convergence paradigm and comprehensive understanding of the user needs. This workshop intends to bring its participants together on these important and interesting issues.

Organized by the researchers that have worked on distributed VR systems, pervasive computing and mobile devices for years, this workshop is in its third year in conjunction with IEEE VR conference. We would like to invite researchers and practitioners alike to participate in the discussion of topics related to infrastructure, device, content, application and user aspects of cloud-mobile convergence for VR. We will also examine representative systems that feature some characteristics of this concept. The papers, presentations and supplemental submission materials will provide the basics for the plenary discussion. The list of topics includes but is not limited to:
• Architectures of infrastructure that facilitate cloud-mobile convergence.
• Design spaces and principles for VR systems that integrate clouds and mobile devices.
• Enabling technologies, such as wireless broadband technologies, task distribution and scheduling algorithms, and network streaming methods.
• Design and implementation of novel devices.
• Presentation, customization and personalization techniques for virtual contents.
• State-of-the-art applications.
• Related perception and human factor issues.
• User studies and experience surveys.
